The Russian national team lost to Canada in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Ice Hockey World Championship in Latvia and left the tournament. The Maple Leaves snatched victory in overtime.
Despite experts considering the Russian team as the favorite, the match was evenly contested. Moreover, the teams played quite cautiously, and the first goal was scored only on the 35th minute. It was scored by Eugene Temkin, who played successfully in front of the net.
The third period started for the Russians with a penalty. The Canadians made full use of their numerical advantage: at the beginning of the 46th minute, Adam Henrik equalized the score – 1:1. No one scored until the end of the third period.
In overtime, played 3-on-3, Canada looked more lively. It seemed that the Russians were tired and couldn’t keep up with their opponents. One such lapse in speed led to Stecher beating several Russians and passing the puck to Andrew Mangiapane, who scored the winning goal for Canada.
Thus, the Russian national team ends its fight for the championship at the quarterfinal stage. For Russia, this defeat is the fourth in a row against Canada at the World Championships.
In the next round, Canada will play against USA, and Finland against Germany.
