CSKA Wins the VTB United League for the Ninth Time in a Row

CSKA became the champion of the VTB United League for the ninth time in a row. In the final series of the 2020/2021 season, the ‘army men’ defeated UNICS 3-0.

On Thursday, June 10, the third and final match of the series took place. In it, the army team secured a confident lead after the first two quarters, making the score 52:40.

Throughout the third quarter, the gap remained at least 10 points, however, at the start of the last quarter, CSKA faltered. UNICS conducted a series of successful attacks and defended well, reducing the deficit to 2 points. However, then followed a series by the ‘army men’, who brought the matter to victory — 89:81.

The script of the first two matches was similar. CSKA consistently created a comfortable lead by halftime and brought the matter to victory, not allowing the Kazan team to take the lead even by 1 point.

Thus, CSKA becomes the winner of the VTB United League for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. Last year, the team could not achieve this success due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, the season was not completed.

The last time CSKA was displaced from its dominant position was by Khimki in the 2010/2011 season. At that time, the tournament was called the VTB Promo Cup.

Recall that earlier CSKA participated in the EuroLeague Final Four. In the semifinal, the ‘army men’ lost to Turkish Anadolu Efes (86:89), and in the bronze medal match, they could not handle the Italian Olimpia (73:83).
