Ukraine lost their first match at the UEFA Euro 2020. The game, more resembling a great thriller, ended with a victory for the Netherlands national team — 3:2.
In the first half, the Dutch had more possession and created real threats in front of Georgy Bushchan’s goal, who skillfully handled the attempts to score. The Ukrainians mostly counterattacked, but it didn’t lead to real threats. The teams went to halftime with zeros on the scoreboard.
The picture was little different in the second half, but the goalkeepers could no longer save their teams. In the first half, the teams combined for 15 shots and failed to score, while in the second period, it took only 8 attempts for 5 goals.
The Netherlands scored first, with Georginio Wijnaldum marking with an accurate shot on the 52nd minute. Seven minutes later, Wout Weghorst supported his teammate’s attacking surge.
These setbacks didn’t deter Ukraine. Already on the 75th minute, Andriy Yarmolenko reduced the score deficit to a minimum, and four minutes later, Roman Yaremchuk equalized the score.
Nevertheless, the Ukrainian footballers couldn’t maintain the acceptable result, as Denzel Dumfries prevented them. He put the Netherlands ahead again on the 85th minute, thereby setting the final score — 3:2.
In another Group C match, Austria secured a victory over North Macedonia thanks to two goals in the dying minutes — 3:1.
