Italy and Denmark became the first quarterfinalists of Euro-2020

Italy and Denmark advanced to the quarterfinals of Euro-2020. In their Round of 16 matches, the teams defeated Wales and Austria respectively. However, their paths to success were completely different.

Wales — Denmark

The Danes were favorites with odds of 1.90, but the game turned out fairly straightforward for them. At least, that’s what the scoreboard suggests — 4:0. On the other hand, two goals were scored late when the Welsh pushed for a comeback. Overall, neither team had a massive edge in play.

Regardless, Denmark secured the win and moved on to the next round, where they’ll face the winner of the Netherlands vs. Czechia matchup.

Wales 0:4 Denmark.

Goals: Dolberg, 27 — 0:1; Dolberg, 48 — 0:2; Maehle, 88 — 0:3; Braithwaite, 90+4 — 0:4.

Italy — Austria

For the Italians, the match was extremely tough, and qualification for the quarterfinals had to be decided in extra time after the two halves ended goalless. Notably, Austria scored a goal, but it was disallowed after a VAR review due to a slight offside.

By the start of extra time, Austria had made only one substitution. Fatigue began to show, and the Italians capitalized on it twice in the first 15 minutes. Just before the end of the second extra period, the Austrians managed to pull one back, narrowing the gap to the minimum, but that’s as far as the underdogs went.

Italy 2:1 AET Austria

Goals: Chiesa, 95 — 1:0; Pessina, 105 — 2:0; Kalajdzic, 114 — 2:1.

The next opponent for the Italian team will be determined by the result of the Belgium vs. Portugal match.
